Fishing Thoughts From Daniel’s Wife

When Daniel and I were dating, it never really bothered me much that he spent so much time fishing. I was always forgiving when, every year he was gone fishing on my birthday. I should have known, though, what I would be in for when he and a buddy went fishing the night before our church wedding and did not return until mid-morning the next day. Maybe he had to calm his nerves, and fishing was his therapy. Of course, form my point of view; fishing is more of an addiction for which there is NO CURE! Fortunately, I’m happy to say that I caught him hook, line and sinker! So here are just a few thoughts, 13 years and 3 children later.

Now, is it only my husband, or are all fishermen in general this way? Daniel has an awesome memory when it relates to any past fishing trip. He can remember where he went, who he went with, what he caught, how much it weighed, what he caught it with, what the weather was like, etc, etc. However, I’m lucky if he remembers our anniversary. special days, things we did last year, last month or even last week! He’s getting better, or maybe smarter! Keep the wife happy = fish more!

I also understand that there is no comparison between going to work or going fishing, but it amazes me that he can wake up at 3:30 a.m. and be out the door by 3:45 if there is a fishing trip planned. Any other time, he waits until the last possible minute before getting up.

Occasionally, he’ll tease me and say,” if you want us to do something together for our anniversary, meet me on the boat!” Oh, wait a minute, he seriously means that! What was I thinking? I actually would not mind fishing, but I prefer fresh water, which we used to do years ago. He seems that with salt-water fishing, I can never get used to the up and down motion of the boat once we anchor. Being seasick is something I do not enjoy at all! I suppose, though, that being on a boat in the gulf should be a breeze. After all, marriage is like that, too. You know, up and down, calm and rough, you feel good, you feel sick…

Over all, I have no problems with the amount of time Daniel spends fishing. I understand that is a part of who he is, and that he needs time to himself or with his buddies. Besides it gives me the opportunity to go shopping! I don’t mind when he goes, as long as there is nothing-major going on, like GRADUATION on May 19th, Daniel! In all seriousness, Daniel is a great father who never misses anything concerning his children. I’m more lenient with him, but he’s learning Daniel is a super fisherman, and we enjoy having fresh fish so often.

In closing, Daniel often reminds me that I am right above fishing on his list but it’s bumping me in the butt, so I’d better stay on my toes!!! Guess I’d better, since I love him!
